Ok, since this blog may have looked abandoned for the last 6 months or so, I thought about posting about my recent trip to india along with some pix.
needless to say it was a very nice trip even if not always easy. for instance travelling by train: it took me some time to figure out how to buy tickets and make a reservation for a specific train... and reading the timetables is a science in itself... but in the end its fun, because you basicly start from zero, like a child. and you absolutely have to learn how to be patient, because if you get upset everything starts to collapse around you and nothing will work out the way you want it.
the itinerary took me from fort cochin, ernakulam, then further south to varkala, to the backwaters in alleppey, then up to goa and finally a quick visit to mumbai (dig out a map if you want to know where all of these places are - basicly the trip was along the west coast from south to north)
food was absolutely amazing for the most part. very often i didn't even know what i was eating but it was tasty, and that's all what mattered :) the only problem i had was when i got sick for 2 days in goa with diarrhea and slight fever. first i was afraid it could be malaria, but then it suddenly went away... i still dont know what caused this.
the weather was optimal, temperatures from 25°C to around 30°C, not a single rainy or cloudy day! you only get that typical indian haze at times (the main reason for the great photographs).
by far the most magical part was a two day trip to the kerala backwaters on a houseboat. an absolutely amazing experience. the landscape, the people, the sounds, the smells, the wildlife, just about everything. there was something extremely magical in the air... it felt like floating through the garden of eden. its hard to describe though... it feels like visiting the very place where life started altogether.. something like that :) basicly the backwaters is a very complex system of natural fresh water canals that cut through very fertile ground with huge rice fields and mangrove forests. i took a couple of short films with my camera, too. if i get the chance i will upload them later.
varkala was also interesting. its a holy place for hindus with a 2000 year old temple and lots of pilgrims visiting the sea performing strange rituals. not only that, but the beach there is simply fantastic, too. some nice cliffs in the back where you can climb around and get a wonderful view of the sea.
goa was absolutely relaxing. basically beach life in a bamboo hut, thats where i did plenty of reading. also a lot of stranded hippies there :) very interesting blend of european (portuguese) and indian food, too. the typical goan fish curry is a delicious thing to try. i also did some dolphin spotting. each day huge numbers of dolphins came close to the beaches at palolem to get their breakfast fish around sunrise. i've never seen such big dolphins, they were huge, like 4-5 meters long! however, taking pictures was not an easy task because they were so quick in popping out of the water.. the pic shown below was basicly the only useful one...
mumbai was rather stressful, loud and dirty (smog). traffic was hell (as in all of india btw.) because everyone is honking away at full speed and the streets are governed by the law of nature, which also know as "survival of the fittest" (what basically means that the cars will run you over if you dont watch out as a pedestrian). however, some good markets there but not a very relaxing shopping experience as every merchant is trying very hard to convince you to buy his goods. anyway, i must say i was surprised at how well kept the city centre is, big and clean roads, nice architecture. you wouldn't think you're in india if it wasnt for the people. however, the slums in the suburban area must be absolute hell. i wasn't there cause i ran out of time but i could see the endless carpet of shantys covering the country from the air. i was told they have the highest malaria rate world wide there...
well.... i could go on and on... enjoy the pix:
